Flax Hull Lignans
What are lignans?

Lignans
are a group of phytonutrients (plant chemicals)
found
in seeds and grains. The lignans found in flaxseed
are called
secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG)...
nature's richest source of plant lignans
.  The lignan in
flaxseed is a type of carbohydrate and classed as a phenolic
compound or polyphenol.

There are
two general types of lignans - those found in
plants
and those found in animals and humans or mammalian
lignans
. When plant lignan SDG from flaxseed is ingested, it is
converted in the colon by friendly bacteria to mammalian
lignans - enterodial (ED) and enterolactone (EL). Thus flaxseed
lignan SDG is a precursor to mammalian lignans ED and EL.

Why do I want flax hull lignans?

The flax hull lignans are a potent antioxidant that enhances
the immune system and has antiviral, antibacterial and
antifungal properties.  You would have to ingest gallons of
flaxseeds in order to obtain the same benefits as a scoop of
Organic Flax Hull Lignans will provide you.

Flaxseed has by far the richest source of phytonutrients .
It yields an extraordinary 800 mcg/g. Flaxseed oil has less than
2% of lignans.
Flax Hull Lignans called  SDG lignans, found
primarily in the hull of the flaxseed are extracted from flax hulls
through a no-heat process.
Flax Hull Lignans is a highly
concentrated natural pure food.

While attention surrounding flaxseed has been its source of
essential fatty acids, recent studies and research have
revealed that the substance called "lignans" within flaxseed has
very important and useful medicinal qualities too. The health
benefits of lignans may equal or surpass those of flaxseed oil.
Research has shown that people who have high amounts of
lignans in their system have notably lower cancer rates. These
lignan compounds have shown such extraordinary potential that
they have been studied by the National Cancer Institute for
their cancer preventative properties.

Research suggests lignans may benefit consumers in the
following areas:
  • Bone health
  • Breast health
  • Prostate health
  • Colon Health
  • Reducing symptoms of menopause
  • Reducing symptoms of PMS
  • Heart health
  • Hair loss
  • Acne
  • Inflammation
  • Potential anticancer role

Lignans and Prostate Cancer
Testosterone is the male sex hormone,
thought to be important in the
progession of prostate cancer. Lignans
in flax seed bind testosterone in the
same manner as for estrogen (above).
Researchers at Duke University found
that supplementation with milled flax
resulted in significant decreases in both
total and free testosterone in prostate
cancer patients. They also found a
decrease in PSA levels in men with
early stage prostate cancer.

Flax Hull Lignans and Breast Cancer
According to recent research, lignans
act by limiting a tumour's ability to use
estrogen in the body as a fuel source to
proliferate. Lignans stimulate the liver
to make SHBG (sex hormone binding
globulin) and attach to estrogen
receptors contained on the SHBG. In
effect, the lignans prevent sex
hormones from binding to these
receptors. Since SHBG is found in
breast cancer cells, the lignans appear
to interfere with estrogen-mediated
tumour growth in this type of cancer

Flax Hull LIgnans and Diabetes
Lignans may help to protect against
diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, the most
common type of diabetes, is associated
with abnormalities in blood glucose
levels due to insulin resistance of the
cells. A study published in The
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in
2002 reported that lignans improve
glucose levels and insulin resistance.
