What is Dry Skin?
Dry skin is known as xerosis. Dry skin has a low level
of sebum and can be prone to sensitivity. Your skin
needs moisture to stay smooth and supple, and
retaining moisture is especially difficult in winter. The
skin has a parched look caused by its inability to
retain moisture. It usually feels "tight" and
uncomfortable after washing unless some type of
moisturizer or skin cream is applied. it is
accompanied with scaliness, itching and cracks in the
skin. Simple daily routines, such as bathing and towel
drying, may actually remove moisture from the skin.
Bathing provides the skin with moisturizers
temporarily, but it removes the skin's oily lipid layer
and in the long run causes more moisture loss than
gain. The wrong moisturizing lotion can have the
same effect. Generally, water-based lotions are best
cosmetically but oil-based creams are more effective
in trapping moisture.
How do I get Dry Skin?
- The oil glands do not supply enough lubrication
to the skin. As a result, the skin becomes
dehydrated. - The harsh weather of a cold winter.
- Poor diet. Nutritional deficiencies, especially
deficiencies of vitamin A and the B vitamins,
can also contribute to dry skin. - Conditions such as dermatitis, eczema,
psoriasis, or seborrhea. - Environmental factors... exposure to sun, wind,
cold, chemicals, or cosmetics, or excessive
bathing with harsh soaps. - Dry skin can be a sign of an underactive thyroid.
- Serious skin complications can arise for people
with diabetes. - Certain drugs, including diuretics,
antispasmodics, and antihistamines, can
contribute to dry skin.
Can I prevent Dry Skin?
You can minimize the effects of dry skin. How?
- During cold months, use a humidifier in your
home. Minimize activity and surroundings if it
results in itching. Sleep in a temperature zone
of 68-75oF. The humidity level should be 45-
55%. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin
moist from the inside out. - Limiit the amount of time in the sun. When you
are in the sun, keep your skin protected.
Where a sun hat and moisturize your skin with a
lotion that has a sufficient SPF. - Lukewarm water is suggested when you bathe
or shower. Your skin will dry out when you bath
in hot water. Concentrate on keeping your time
in the tub or shower to no more than fifteen
(15) minutes. Your skin will love you if you do
not bathe more than once a day. Bathing too
frequently can cause skin dryness due to
removing the natural oils from your skin. - Stay away from from harsh soaps. Avoid using
soaps that contain sodium lauryl sulfate. Use a
soap that is gentle on the skin. ie. once
again... Smooth Skin Natural Cleanser! - Limit your use of deodorant soaps. If you must
use them, limit their use to areas that develop
an odor such as the armpits, genital area, and
feet. - Regardless of what our moms told us, avoid
the vigorous use of a washcloth in cleansing.
When toweling dry, do not rub the skin. Blot or
pat dry so there is still some moisture left on the
skin. It is suggested to follow with once again...

Vitamin A and the B vitamin. - Do not smoke! Smoking has a harmful effect
on the skin for several reasons. Nicotine
constricts the blood vessels, including the tiny
capillaries that serve the skin. This deprives the
skin of the oxygen and nutrients it needs for
good health. Smoking also can make the skin
